Are you putting a tree up this year? If you have a kitty, you may very well find yourself having to pluck your feline pal out of that carefully-decorated centerpiece. Read on as a local Hope Hull, AL vet offers some advice on catproofing your tree.
Decorate Carefully
Our feline friends tend to be very drawn to shiny, dangly things. Keep this in mind as you’re decorating. Put anything shiny or dangly on the top third of the tree. Decorate that bottom third (or half) with dull, unbreakable objects.
Bribe The Kitty
Another thing you can try? Give Fluffy some of her holiday gifts ahead of schedule. If your furry pal tires herself out on her new catnip mouse, she may not have the energy to try to climb the tree.
Fake It
You might want to consider getting a fake tree. Your kitty won’t be able to easily climb a wire branch! Plus, you’ll be able to re-use it next year, which will save both money and resources.

Choosing the right spot for your tree is also important. If possible, put it in a corner. If possible, place it away from things like desks, couches, and armchairs. These things all make very convenient kitty launchpads.
Secure The Perimeter
You can also try putting things around the tree. Using tin foil as a tree skirt may sound weird, but it may help: cats don’t like that crinkly feeling. Plus, the reflections actually are pretty. You can also use a deterrent scent, such as citrus.

If your furry friend is still extremely frisky, you may need to take a few additional steps to secure the tree. A sturdy base is a must. You can also try securing the tree top to the wall or ceiling with fishing line. It won’t show, but will provide some additional support.
Training
We know, usually cats train their humans. However, you can teach your furry pal to stay away from the tree. Whenever Fluffy approaches it, do something to startle her. Clap your hands, stomp your foot, or activate that singing snowman your aunt gave you. The point isn’t to hurt or scare your cat: you just want to make her a bit wary.
