5 Ways To Keep Your Cat Safe

September 15 2023

You’ve probably heard that old adage about cats having nine lives. This isn’t actually true, but it isn’t hard to see how that rumor got started. Fluffy does have a knack for getting herself into mischief! However, even if your feline pal sees herself as an invincible lioness, she’s actually still quite small and vulnerable. A local Montgomery, AL vet lists some ways to keep your furry pal safe in this article.

Keep Kitty In

This may very well be the single most important thing you can do for your furball. Cats that go outdoors are at much greater risk of getting hurt, lost, or, unfortunately, even killed, than indoor kitties. As soon as Fluffy sets those cute little paws outside, she’s vulnerable to a whole slew of threats, which range from cars to chemicals to stray/unleashed dogs to weather conditions.

Spay/Neuter

While the biggest reason to get your furry buddy fixed is to prevent unwanted litters, there are also some health and behavioral benefits, some of which directly affect your kitty’s safety. For example, cats that haven’t been fixed have greater risks of developing certain diseases, and are highly susceptible to the hormonal urges that drive them to go looking for love. Fluffy will be harder to keep in, and more prone to engage undesired behaviors, such as yowling and spraying, if she isn’t fixed.

Preventative Care

Parasites aren’t just a disgusting inconvenience. Some, such as heartworms, can be life-threatening. Others, such as fleas and ticks, can transmit other parasites and/or dangerous diseases. Vaccinations are also very important, as they can protect your feline buddy from rabies, feline leukemia, and a host of other diseases.

Petproofing

Never underestimate a kitty’s ability to get into mischief. In fact, some cats seem to be specifically drawn to the things that are least safe for them. Make your home safe for Fluffy. Some of the things you’ll want to address include small or sharp items, toxic plants, chemicals and medication, plastic bags and ties, and anything with strings or cords. Ask your vet for more information.

Veterinary Care

Kitties are very, very good at masking signs of illness, so it’s important to keep a close eye out for warning signs that something is off. These include vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, and changes in weight, appearance, or behavior. Call us right away if you notice any of these.

Monitoring

Last but not least, just pay attention to Fluffy, and keep an eye on her whereabouts. Cats are quite curious, and can end up in all sorts of dangerous spots.
