Signs Of Allergies In Dogs

July 17 2023

Have you noticed your canine pal seeming a bit itchy lately? Are Fido’s eyes red and watery? If so, your furry buddy may very well have allergies. Just like people, pets can become allergic to a variety of things. Plants, grass, dust, mold, and pollen are some of the most common culprits, but your pooch could also react to insects, fumes, or even materials. A Hope Hull, AL veterinarian offers some advice on what to look for in this article.

Itching can of course be related to fleas, but if Fido is current on his parasite prevention, that probably means there’s something else going on. Your pooch may bite or lick himself, and he may rub up against things—including you—to get those stubborn spots.

That itchiness can cause dogs to bite themselves, which can lead to sores or hot spots. You may also notice thinning fur, red or scaly skin, or discoloration.

Ear Issues

Allergies are often the culprit behind stubborn ear infections. Sometimes these will go away with a course of medication, only to return as soon as the treatment stops. Fido may shake his head or paw his ears. You may see or smell discharge or odor, and your furry friend’s ears may look red and/or waxy.

Hay Fever

Fido’s allergic reactions often look quite a lot like ours do: he may have red, runny eyes, and may sneeze a lot. Snoring can also be a sign of allergies. More severe reactions can lead to difficulty breathing, which can be life-threatening. Fortunately, though, those cases are rare.

Tummy Upsets

Food allergies are not uncommon in dogs. This happens when FIdo’s body decides that a certain type of food—generally a protein, such as chicken—is an invader, and launches an immune response. Food allergies can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and flatulence, and can also trigger the signs we’ve mentioned above.

Allergic reactions can also cause swelling. This can happen as a result of an insect bite, but can also be caused by coming into contact with environmental allergens. If your canine companion’s face or mouth is swollen, contact your vet right away.
