Have you just adopted a kitten? Cats are technically kittens until they are about a year old, though that adorable toddler stage usually lasts about six to eight months. Our furry buddies are very active and playful, especially when they’re young. Keeping your feline overlord entertained is an important part of little Fluffy’s care regimen. A Montgomery, AL vet offers some tips on playing with your new pet below.
Make It Routine
Try to carve time out for kitty playtime every day. This doesn’t have to take long: usually five to ten minutes is plenty. Try to do this at the same time every day: that steady routine will help your furry pal feel loved and safe. Playing is also helpful for bonding. Little Fluffy will know that you’re doing something for her amusement. That will definitely score you some purrs!
Discourage Rough Play
Our feline pals have the instincts of larger cats. Fluffy shares most of her DNA with lions and tigers, and certainly sees herself as a fierce predator. Your furball may be quite interested in figuring out how all those claws and teeth work. Just don’t let her practice on you. It may be cute when a kitten pounces on your toes, but if you don’t nip that habit in the bud, Fluffy will grow up thinking biting and scratching is okay. Don’t punish your tiny panther if she misbehaves, though. That may just scare her. Instead, just say ‘No’ or ‘Play nice’ in a stern, disapproving tone. You can also clap your hands or blow in her face.
Pay Equal Attention
Do you have more than one kitty? Be sure to divide your attention between them equally. Cats can get quite jealous of one another!
Try New Things
Cats are all unique, and they have wildly different opinions on what constitutes a fun toy or play session. One kitty may love feather toys, while another may prefer laser pointers. Try different things, and pay attention to what your little buddy likes best. (Fluffy may prefer batting a bottlecap around to pouncing on that expensive squeaky toy, but that’s another topic.)
Take Pictures
Fluffy never stops being cute, but she’s ridiculously adorable at this stage of her life. Snap plenty of pictures of your little buddy!
